Dear Students and Parents,

The OMPH Chess Team (sponsored by the Knights of Columbus Council 4191) is ready to start our 10th season in the Friendship Chess League, and we are very interested in having new members join the team.  We have enjoyed quite a bit of success in the first nine years, winning the Team Championship of the league twice, and having many of our members perform extremely well in the individual tournaments at the end of the season.

Why should you consider joining the Chess Team at OMPH?  As has been proven in numerous studies, the game of chess teaches vital 21st century skills such as: critical thinking, problem solving, strategic planning, pattern recognition, and concentration.  We have also seen that is self-motivating and strengthens self esteem.  It also allows the participant to learn to have self control over their emotions and feelings, and to constructively express them in a healthy and socially acceptable manner.  These are all life long lessons and skills that not many other games or activities can teach so quickly and effectively.  But to top it all off, we have a tremendous amount of fun!

All students of OMPH School and the OMPH Religious Education Program  in grades 4 through 9 are invited to join.  No prior experience is necessary; we will teach all the basics of the game to all new members and teach/coach them throughout the season.  All the practices are scheduled for Wednesdays from 3PM to 5PM and are held in the Father Kuhn Social Hall.  The season runs for about 19 weeks; from November 7 to March 15.  There is no cost to join and participate in the normal league matches and tournaments.  If you are interested please fill in the permission slip information below.

If you have any questions about the team or just want to talk about it, please feel free to call me on my cell phone 717-690-4755 or email me at
